How to learn a foreign language in 3 months

According to Business Insider, learning a language is not as demanding as many people think. Rather, it can be done in just three months. Benny Lewis, the author of the new book “Fluent in 3 Months: How Anyone at Any Age Can Learn to Speak Any Language from Anywhere in the World”, told BI 10 tips that will help in learning foreign languages. 

1. Speak the language out loud. Beginners should start practicing speaking aloud from the beginning to overcome the fear of mispronouncing or being awkward.

2. Learn practical phrases first. Phrases like “Bathroom where?” may not be eloquent, but understandable enough to communicate.

3. Do not worry about using the correct grammar. Practicing vocabulary and phrases is more important.

4. Practice speaking via video calls with a native speaker. Get free or cheap conversational lessons from a native speaker.

5. Listen to local radio stations. Listening to the radio from a country that speaks the language is another option for developing language skills.

6. Practice a short self-introduction. A minute long self-introduction quickly helps people to learn a lot of conversational phrases and vocabulary.

7. Avoid generalized language courses. Those do not provide personalized feedback, which is essential for beginners. 

8. Instead, utilize online free language-learning services. Internet sites that provide personal language sessions and feedback with a native speaker are available.

9. Put a lot of time into practicing and learning. Focusing on it full time is much more efficient than just an hour or two a day.

10. Do not aim for perfection. Targeting the end-stage and perfection often leads to giving up in early stages. Do not hesitate to make mistakes.

Lewis believes that the biggest problem is that people are approaching learning a language as a factual subject; focusing on grammar, spelling and vocabulary first to reach the ultimate goal of fluency. 

“People become too obsesses with that end stage that they never get past the beginner stage,” he was quoted as saying.
